Located in the lush hills of Appalachian Kentucky, our farm consists of 1.5 acres of diversified herb plantings surrounded by meadow and forest. Our herbs are carefully tended using sustainable growing practices, harvested by hand, and then expertly dried in our on-site drying facility.

Why support small, regional herb farms?
Herbs lose their aroma, flavor and potency when they are dried or stored improperly for long periods of time. The imported herbs you find in grocery store bulk bins are often grown on an incredibly large scale, using questionable labor practices, harvested mechanically, dried in full sun and stored in a warehouse for years. Not only can these practices be unethical and unsustainable, but they result in a low quality dried herb. The majority of herbal tea brands, even those blended locally, are made with these low quality herbs.
At Among the Oaks, and on other small, organic herb farms across the US, herbs are grown on a human scale. This allows us to put great care into every single plant we grow.

We then harvest our herbs at peak quality and make them available fresh, or we properly dry them in small batches. Take a look at our teas and you will immediately notice the difference in quality – our herbs retain much of the color, flavor, smell and potency as the living plant out in the field. That’s how you know it’s good!

Our Growing Practices
We care very deeply about tending the land in a way that not only conserves it but is truly regenerative.
-
✿
By diversifying our plantings with a mix of annuals, perennials, shrubs and native species
-
✿
By tending the soil. We care for the soil by keeping it covered with living plants and mulch as much as possible. We practice no-till and do not spray any kind of forever chemicals.
-
✿
Managing our cultivated land in a way that supports wildlife instead of harms them
-
✿
By managing invasive species with care
-
✿
By responsibly foraging and spreading seeds and roots of the plants that we wildcraft
-
✿
By caring for our farming team and our broader community. We believe humans are an integral part of the land, so stewardship and care of people is an important ethic of our business!
